Dr. Bertelson is a board certified colon and rectal surgeon. She is also double-boarded in general surgery. She has been with Colon and Rectal Clinic of Colorado since November 2016. She previously practiced for three and a half years with the largest colorectal surgery group in Nebraska, established nearly 100 years ago. Dr. Bertelson specializes in all aspects of colon and rectal surgery. This includes laparoscopic and robotic surgery for Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, colon, rectal, and anal cancer, rectal prolapse, diverticular disease, parastomal hernia, and reoperative abdominal and pelvic surgery, as well as simple and complex anorectal problems such as hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures, and fecal incontinence. While in Omaha, Dr. Bertelson trained residents, fellows and medical students from Creighton University and the University of Nebraska. Previously, Dr. Bertelson served Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and veterans as a general surgeon with the Indian Health Service and Veterans Administration in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr. Bertelson received a Bachelor’s of Arts with high honors in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Montana in Missoula. After attending medical school at the University of Washington, one of the top ranked medical schools in the U.S., Dr. Bertelson completed her general surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center/Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She completed additional fellowship training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Arizona, as well as subspecialty fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the world-renowned Cook County Hospital and the University of Illinois Chicago. During her fellowship, she had the highest score in the nation on the in-training exam, and again the following year on the Colon and Rectal Surgery board examination. Dr. Bertelson has authored scientific publications including journal articles and book chapters. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
As an academic affiliate serving northwest, central, and the southeast Denver metro area, Dr. Bertelson has received referrals for everything from simple anorectal problems treated in the office setting to complex abdominal and pelvic problems requiring operative management. As a graduate of both colon and rectal and minimally invasive fellowships, she combines expertise in these two fields to provide cutting edge care using laparoscopy and robotic surgery for colon and rectal cancer, ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease, diverticulitis, parastomal hernia, and rectal prolapse. She is deeply interested in advances in management of cancer, and is dedicated to sphincter preservation and the newest surgical and nonsurgical techniques for management of rectal cancer. She has also had extensive training in complex anorectal disease from international experts, and she brings these techniques and experiences with her to daily practice. Beyond her expertise and experience, Dr. Bertelson takes the most pride in providing high quality care with great compassion; her greatest accomplishment is not just gaining but keeping the trust of her patients.
Getting to Know Dr. Bertelson
Dr. Bertelson grew up in North Pole, Alaska, and is thrilled to be established in Colorado. She spends her spare time with her husband, two sons and two rescued greyhounds. She looks forward to finding more time to spend in the mountains any time of year. She also loves opera, fine arts, reading, and travel.
